May 30 is just around the corner, and it's time to figure out how you're going to survive Interstate 5.

Starting at the end of the month, in phase one of a four-phase project, all lanes of northbound I-5 will be closed between Richards Boulevard and the Capital City freeway.

Travelers flying out of Sacramento International Airport should take I-5 north to the westbound Capital City freeway, then get on eastbound Interstate 80 and reconnect on I-5.

Traffic coordinators can only speculate as to where traffic problems may arise during phase one, but motorists coming north will probably take alternates like Highway 99 or Highway 160, Freeport or Franklin boulevards and Land Park Drive.

Transportation officials said to expect heavier-than-normal delays through areas of West Sacramento and Land Park, and they said that motorists need to be careful through school zones and neighborhoods.

West Sacramento commuters who work downtown should get ready for heavy traffic on West Capitol Avenue, the I Street Bridge, the Tower Bridge, the Capital City freeway, Jefferson Boulevard and Harbor Boulevard.

People heading to River Cats games will also need to be aware of added traffic.
