One person was killed and several others were injured Friday in a crash involving an Amtrak bus and three other vehicles near the Sutter County town of Nicolaus, the California Highway Patrol said.

The wreck took place at about 1:30 p.m. along Highway 70 near Marcum Road.

Highway 70 was shut down for several hours.

Capt. Jim Young said the driver of a black Honda Acura tried to pass the bus, which was headed northbound. The driver lost control of the Acura and ended up striking two cars that were headed southbound. The Acura then ran off the road, and a Nissan Quest was pushed into the other lane and was struck by the bus.

The driver of the Quest was killed.

The driver of the Acura could face vehicular manslaughter charges, the CHP said.

The identities of the people involved in the wreck have not been released.

According to records from the Department of Transportation, the bus belongs to Earl W. Simning of Santa Rosa who maintains Charters, LLC. The vehicle's safety rating is satisfactory.
