Girl Arrives For Life-Saving Treatment

Little Girl Has Flesh-Easting Bacteria

UPDATED: 11:09 p.m. PDT June 28, 2000

A young Hawaiian girl with a flesh-eating disease arrived in Sacramento Wednesday night for live-saving treatment at Shriners Hospital.

Just a few days ago, little Alysha Shimizu was an active 5-year-old.

She took a fall and had to have stitches in her knee. A fever followed and then surgery.

Alysha has a rare, flesh-eating bacteria that spreads quickly.

Doctors in Hawaii had to remove the skin on her right side from her belly button to her calf.

Alysha traveled from Hawaii to Sacramento on a special flight with medical personnel at her side.

Doctors at Shriners will use a special heating element over her bed to regulate her body temperature.

If all goes well, a delicate surgery will follow.
