Police Identify Man

A body was found Thursday in the Delta-Mendota Canal downstream from the spot where two vehicles crashed into the water earlier this week, killing as many as seven people.

The body, which was found along a stretch of canal near Patterson, was identified Thursday evening as Lucas Martinez 19, from Lodi, the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department said.

Martinez was the last of six people who were killed when the Ford Explorer he was riding in collided with a septic truck and plunged into the canal on Tuesday afternoon near Westley.

The discovery was made close to the intersection of Sperry Avenue and Rogers Road.

Grieving family members were critical of the amount of time it took divers to recover the bodies, but officials said they did the best they could given the dangerous conditions in the canal. Authorities also said the remoteness of the area and the long amount of time needed to assemble divers made the effort a recovery effort instead of a rescue from the start.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department has released the names of the other four SUV passengers who died but were recovered from the water:

  • Issac Tapia, 16, from Lodi
  • Elizar Cruz, 19, from Bakersfield
  • Adriana Garcia, 18, from Lodi
  • Adan Martinez, 22, from Lodi
  • Eulalia Garcia, 34, driver of the SUV, from Lodi

The deceased driver of the septic truck was identified by his employer as 45-year-old Luis Llamas, of Merced.

Tapia's funeral will be held Wednesday at St. Anne's Parish in Lodi.

An account for donations has been set up for the Garcia family at a Bank of America in Lodi. The account number is 1225468057.
