Nevada City and Grass Valley passed an emergency ban on "safe and sane" fireworks Monday night, said Terry McMahan of the Nevada County Fire District.

The ban means that fireworks cannot be used or sold.

Aerial fireworks and festivities will still go on at the Nevada County Fairgrounds for the Fourth of July.

Last Thursday, Grass Valley rescinded permits for eight city stands before fireworks went on sale.
