A man who was killed by police after he allegedly beat a toddler to death over the weekend was identified by authorities as Turlock resident Sergio Casian Aguiar.

Sheriff's detectives believe the 2-year-old victim was Aguiar's son, but the coroner will use DNA technology to confirm the relationship.

DNA samples were taken from 27-year-old Aguiar, the boy and the victim's mother. Officials hope to have test results back within a week.

Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department officials were investigating the reason behind the fatal attack.

The sheriff's department received a 911 call at 10:15 p.m. from an elderly couple about a man kicking a baby in the head on Bradbury Road near the intersection of Blaker Road, police said.

A helicopter crew was flying above Turlock when the call came in. When officers observed the assault taking place from the air, they decided to perform an emergency landing in a cow pasture near the road, police said.

A Modesto officer exited the helicopter but was unable to reach the road where the assault was allegedly taking place because of an electric fence.

The officer then shot Aguiar, who died at the scene, police said.

The infant was brought to Emanuel Medical Center and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

The officer who shot Aguiar was placed on administrative leave, which is standard practice, police said.

Detectives said Aguiar does not have any type of criminal history record. A toxicology test will be conducted on both Aguiar and the child.
