University Of Kentucky Lab Examining Filly's Body

It will be at least two more weeks before additional information is known about what caused the filly Eight Belles to break down in the Kentucky Derby.

A lab at the University of Kentucky has begun to examine the body of the horse that was euthanized following her runner-up finish in the Derby. But the filly's owner, Rick Porter, said researchers have only told him that both of her front ankles were broken.

Porter said blood and tissue tests have been submitted for further examination. It will take at least two weeks to get back full results of the necropsy. Trainer Larry Jones said those tests will prove the filly was not on steroids.

Eight Belles, who won three stakes races at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., this season, was euthanized on the track at Churchill Downs after galloping about a quarter-mile past the finish line.
