Local firefighters are gearing up for what could be a busy fire season and they are seeking the public's help to lessen dangers.

In recent weeks, there have been at least four major major blazes, including one near Reno and three in Southern California.

In anticipation of more fires, Cal Fire is urging the public to be prepared as part of Wildfire Awareness Week.

At the top of the list is a request for homeowners living in wooded or grassy areas to clear at least 100 feet around residences to help keep the structures safe during a fire.

"It's time now, before it gets hot, before we really get into fire season, to start cutting that vegetation back," said Ken Pimlott, assistant deputy director for Cal Fire. "We want that 100-foot defensible space around every home."

Pimlott also asked that residents put address numbers on homes so firefighters can easily find them.

He also said anyone planning to mow dry grass should do it before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. to lessen the chance of igniting a fire by accident.
