Con artists talked their way into the home of an elderly Roseville couple and stole money from them earlier this week, police said.

Authorities received a report that two alleged scammers knocked on the door of a house in the Hillcrest neighborhood at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. The home is near St. Rose Catholic Church.

Police said the man and woman entered the couple's home by pretending to know them.

"These type of thefts are unfortunately common, especially in the spring," Police Chief Mike Blair said in a news release. "Often con artists gain access to residents' property by offering to do home repair work. Residents are reminded to never let strangers into their homes, and to call police immediately to report suspicious persons or suspicious activity."

The victims told police that the male alleged scammer told the couple he was doing some fence work for a neighbor and needed to use the elderly couple's electricity for his power tools.

The man offered to pay the homeowners $50 for the use of their electricity, gave the homeowner a $100 bill and asked for change.

When the male homeowner got change, the alleged male scammer followed him and noted where the money was kept. The man and woman continued to talk and distract the elderly couple.

After the man and woman left, the victims discovered money missing from their house. They immediately called police.

Police described the alleged con artists as in their 50s and of undisclosed race.

The man was said to be about 5 feet 8 inches tall and 175 pounds. He had black hair, wore a baseball hat, glasses, a white T-shirt with writing on it and light-colored pants.

The woman about about 5 feet 4 inches tall and 200 pounds. She had straight, brown, shoulder-length hair and wore a low-cut multi-colored dress. She also had a red tattoo on her left breast.

Their vehicle was described as a green newer-model Chrysler station wagon.

Anyone with information may call the Roseville Police Department at 916-774-5070 or Roseville Crime Stoppers at 916-783-7867.
