Cameras Bust Hundreds Of Drivers In Elk Grove

Traffic citations are flying out by the hundreds after red-light cameras were installed at two Elk Grove intersections.

The busy intersection of Laguna and Franklin boulevards has the highest number of crashes and injuries in Elk Grove.

In one month, more than 1,000 tickets were issued to drivers at that location. Each ticket is $371.

At the other high-risk intersection -- Laguna Boulevard at Bruceville Road -- cameras have caught 300 drivers in the first month.

"When you see numbers, stats come back like that, it's alarming," police spokesman Chris Trim said.

About 95 percent of tickets are for the same violation, police said -- failure to stop before making a right turn or stopping in the crosswalk before turning right.

"They do have to come to a full and complete stop, because we do have pedestrians, we have bicyclists, we have small children that utilize the crosswalks," Trim said.

Each traffic video is reviewed by a uniformed officer who determines if it really does show an infraction.

Police said they think the number of citations will decline as drivers catch on to the cameras.
